The Robin is a prominent figure in folklore and despite being a year-round native bird in the UK its most common association is with Christmas. This association dates back to the Victorian period when sending Christmas cards took off commercially. People would eagerly await their deliveries from the postmen during the festive period, early Christmas cards robins often depicted robins as postmen with a Yuletide message in their bills. The Victorians even nicknamed their postmen “robins” as they wore red coats.
Robins are also said to symbolise new beginnings and are a sign of good things to come. There is a saying that “when lost loved ones are near, robins appear” so they are seen as messengers for the spirit world.
